Diners were sat outside restaurant moments before car smashed through wall

Diners had been sat outside just minutes before a car smashed through the front of a sushi restaurant.

Police were called after a Toyota ploughed into Zumuku on Lapwing Lane in Didsbury just before 3pm today. No-one was seriously hurt during the horror crash.

But it has now been revealed that customers who had been sat outside at the restaurant just minutes before had a lucky escape after leaving prior to the collision. Greater Manchester Police said 'at least one person' suffered minor injuries. No arrests were made.

Edward Cayton, the managing director of Zumuku, which also has branches in Wilmslow, Cheadle and Sale, told the M.E.N. that a mother and her baby in the restaurant at the time had been grazed by flying glass, but that they were okay and not seriously hurt.

"It has been a bit of a shock for everyone," he said. "It is just not something you want or you expect.

"We are just very, very fortunate that no-one was injured. A couple of minutes before there was some people sat on the street outside right where he drove through, luckily they had left.

"There was a family of three that was sat on the very first table. Thankfully they are okay."

Mr Cayton said the driver was an 'elderly' man who had 'lost control' of his car. He said of the man: "He was really shaken up.

"Everyone is just a little bit shaken up but all is under control now. We are very grateful that no-one was badly hurt because it could have been a very different situation.

"We cannot wait to re-open and do what we love doing." Mr Cayton said he was not sure when the restaurant would be able to fully re-open, but was aiming to be
