Derek McInnes calls out 'generous' Celtic ref decision as baffled Kilmarnock boss left to ask key VAR question

Bemused Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes has questioned referee David Munro over where the eight minutes of stoppage time appeared from in the win against Celtic.

Matt O'Riley smashed the ball home to give Brendan Rodgers' men the lead before Killie battled back with an impressive second half showing to secure their second win of the season over the Hoops thanks to a Nat Phillips own goal and Matty Kennedy winner. And while the Ayrshire side had control of the Scottish Premiership showdown during the closing stages, McInnes admits he was left sweating when the fourth official signalled for a lengthy period of injury time.

McInnes - who had already been issued a yellow card as he confronted whistler Munro as the teams walked off the pitch at half-time joked he almost landed another booking with his reaction. Speaking after the Celtic clash McInnes was asked about the extra-time and responded: "Oft, I nearly got booked then. Where did that eight minutes come from?

"They said there was umpteen VAR checks, but I didn't think there was any. I know there is constant VAR checks but there wasn't any stopping play. Matty Kennedy was down and then came off the pitch, but I think he was very generous. It was a huge surprise but thankfully we still won the game."

McInnes also unleashed on his players during the break - and told BBC Sportsound he got the reaction he wanted from his Kilmarnock side. He said: "I know that Danny's hit the bar and we've had a chance off the line but in terms of dominating the ball, I just thought our press was wrong.

"We needed to remind the players at half-time exactly the type of team we need to be - particularly here at Rugby Park against a team like Celtic. Those reminders were met, the instructions
