Inside the Kilmarnock dressing room rant that inspired Celtic fight back as Derek McInnes vents half-time 'frustration'

Derek McInnes saluted Kilmarnock's bold bravery as his heroes responded to being read the riot act.

But the Rugby Park manager admits he was stunned his side had to get through 10 minutes of added time to seal their fabulous fightback win over Celtic. McInnes’ team downed the champions with a brilliant second-half showing. Trailing 1-0 at the break, the manager tore into his troops and they responded specularly after the restart to earn their triumph which was sealed by Matty Kennedy’s late winner after a Nat Phillips own goal brought them level. McInnes said: “It was a game of two halves. There was a lot of frustration at half-time.

“I had to give the players a wee reminder of the team that we need to be, particularly at Rugby Park, the team we needed to be against Celtic. Celtic dictated the play. They were almost playing with us really, with the ball. They were just kind of coaxing us into mistakes. Even when we got the ball we looked unsure of ourselves.

“We needed to take a step forward and be braver instead of taking a step back and having that hesitancy. We still had the best two chances in the first half when Danny [Armstrong] hits the bar and the one off the line they managed to scramble away.

“At half-time we were lucky to be 1-0 down, I need to be honest on that. My job is to help my players win a game, whatever way we do that. The players needed reminding of what we had to be. We had to be braver, we had to take a step forward. We had to defend a lot of space behind us and with that comes that element of risk.

“We had big performances in the second half when it was the total reverse of the first. It was everything I wanted from my team.
