Dennis Praet could have been Leicester City's solution - but also shows their transfer problem

Brendan Rodgers was unequivocal in his verdict on Leicester City’s midfield. There has been too great a burden on a few of the players because those backing them up have not had enough quality. They need at least two new signings in there this summer.

Rodgers’ thoughts have been reflected in the team selection. While the rest of the team has been rotated during these past six weeks – City playing twice a week every week since returning from the March international break – Youri Tielemans and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall have not, the pair starting 12 of the last 13 fixtures.

Neither has quite played as well over these past few weeks as they have at other stages in the season, and that could well be tiredness. That’s even if Rodgers says they’re both players who are better in rhythm.

James Maddison has also had to play a lot as the third central midfielder regularly called upon by Rodgers over these past few weeks. In all, the trio make up three of the four most-used outfield players in the team this season.

And that is because of what’s happened to the other midfielders. Wilfred Ndidi is injured, Papy Mendy has been unregistered in Europe, Hamza Choudhury is unfancied because of his lack of quality in possession, while Boubakary Soumare has been unused because of his inability, so far, to adapt to Rodgers’ all-action game.

Frustratingly, the best solution on City’s books has been more than 600 miles away in Turin. It feels like Dennis Praet, on loan at Torino, would have made a significant difference over the past few weeks, allowing Tielemans and Dewsbury-Hall to get the rest they need.
