Danny Drinkwater makes honest Leicester City admission as transfer demand emerges

Leicester City title-winner Danny Drinkwater has described his £35m transfer to Chelsea as a “business move gone wrong” as his time at Stamford Bridge comes to an end.

Drinkwater was City’s big-name departure in the summer of 2017, leaving late in the window to join Chelsea on a five-year deal. However, he played just 23 games for the Blues, most recently in August 2018, and leaves on a free transfer with his career having taken a nosedive.

Loan spells with Burnley, Aston Villa, and Turkish side Kasimpasa have not worked out either, but he has featured regularly for Reading in the Championship this term, helping them avoid relegation. He has been wrapped up in controversy off the pitch too, and in 2019 was handed a 20-month driving ban after admitting to drink-driving.

As he gets set to begin the hunt for a new permanent home, Drinkwater has apologised to Chelsea supporters for how the move worked out. He said he was saddened they did not get to see him at his best.

Leicester City midfielder Dennis Praet "wants to know" the club's plans for him as uncertainty looms over his immediate future.

The Belgian is under contract with City until the summer of 2024 but spent the 2021-22 season out on loan at Serie A side Torino. There, he made 24 appearances across all competitions, but missed the best part of three months with a serious foot injury.

Torino had a €15m option to buy Praet after his loan was completed and that has not been activated. They are interested in taking him on loan for a second season but are seemingly yet to receive a response from Leicester. Napoli have also appeared in the mix as a club interested in the
