Debate swirls around Jonathan Hill's future and the identity of the men's head coach as FAI board meet

The FAI board are meeting today, with Jonathan Hill's position as chief executive of the association reportedly under threat.

There is a growing sense that his role as CEO has been weakened following the FAI’s appearance before the Public Accounts Comittee last month.

Association President Paul Cooke said his confidence in Hill had been "challenged", although there was support from FAI chair Tony Keohane.

In December, appearing before members of the Oireachtas Committee on Tourism, Sport and Media, Hill apologised for the "unnecessary and unhelpful distraction" regarding his pay arrangements that led to a Sport Ireland investigation, and the temporary suspension of state funding.

Benefit in kind payments, that were subsequently repaid, were contrary to the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding between the FAI and Government, which led to the association's bailout in 2020.

The meeting at FAI HQ commenced at 9.30am, with Hill, Cooke and Keohane among those in attendance. It’s unlikely that any announcement on Hill’s future will be made today.

The men’s national team's managerial vacancy will also be on the agenda. John O’Shea’s two-game tenure as interim head coach ended with last night’s 1-0 defeat to Switzerland.

The Waterford man has indicated that he is Interested in succeeding Stephen Kenny, however that vacancy is unlikely to be filled until after Eileen Gleeson’s women's side complete their high profile Euro 2025 qualifying fixtures against France in Metz on Friday week and England at the Aviva Stadium the following Tuesday.
