Seoirse Bulfin steps down as Meath hurling boss in surprise announcement

Meath senior hurlers are on the lookout for a new manager after Seoirse Bulfin confirmed to the county board that he would be stepping down from the post due to "personal and family commitments".

Bulfin's departure comes just three weeks before the Royal County begin their Joe McDonagh Cup campaign against Down.

The Limerick native, who previously worked alongside Davy Fitzgerald during his time with Waterford and Clare, took over as Meath manager in August 2022, having coached under previous manager Nick Weir in the previous year.

His impact was immediate, with promotion from Division 2B of the league and a Christy Ring Cup success, achieved last year.

This year's league campaign was a disappointment, however, as the Royals finished bottom of Division 2A.

In a statement to Meath GAA, confiriming his departure, Bulfin said: "I am writing to inform you of my intention to resign as senior hurling manager with immediate effect due to personal and family commitments. The last two and a half years have been immensely satisfying and enjoyable, culminating in winning the League and Christy Ring double last year.

"The organisation and professionalism shown by the coaching team with whom I've worked with over the course of three seasons and who left no stone unturned in our quest to do our very best for Meath GAA and Meath hurling in particular, is to be commended.

"I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all members of Coiste na Mí, Senior Hurling backroom members and players who made the last three seasons so enjoyable. I would like to wish the very best of luck to all involved with Meath GAA going forward."
