David Martindale in grinning Rangers job snub as Livingston boss laughs 'it won't be me' who replaces Michael Beale

Grinning David Martindale didn't have too much to say on who the next Rangers boss will be – but he did confirm it WON'T be him.

The Livingston boss is one of the top rated coaches in the Premiership – as well as the longest serving – and it's long been wondered what he'll have to do to land a step-up after years of the Lions punching above their weight in the top flight. He achieved a top-six finish in 2020/21 and while he's failed to replicate that since, they've been well clear of relegation despite notably having one of the lowest budgets in the league.

He was asked for his thoughts over the Rangers vacancy, but was quick to rule out any suggestions he could be in the running. With a smile he said: "I think we can safely say it won't be me. It won't be, let me tell you."

But who could it be? The Livi boss fancies Derek McInnes and Malky Mackay as two men who could step in to a job that size.

Martindale went on: "Derek and Malky are two top, top managers. I think anyone of those two could do a job at a club the size of Rangers or Celtic. I don't get carried away with these foreign names that are so-called better coaches ... there's an abundance of managers within Scottish football and English football that could do a job.

"Sometimes we get it in our heads we have to look elsewhere for some fantastic skillset that someone has marketed well from foreign shores. I just namechecked two there. Derek is one of the best in the league and Malky is a top, top manager."
