Man learns his fate after killing girl, 17, in horror Mancunian Way smash - court updates as they happened

A speeding driver has been jailed for more than eight years after he ploughed into a wall on the Mancunian Way and killed a 17-year-old girl.

University graduate Rohail Jillani inhaled laughing gas and filmed a Snapchat clip moments before losing control of his Mercedes A180. His passenger Nadia Yusuf died.

A third person in the car, Shafi Sufi, now 20, survived but was left with serious, life-changing injuries. Shortly before the horror crash on January 10 last year, Jillani had taken both hands off the wheel.

The 25-year-old was filming a clip on Snapchat with one hand, and inhaling balloons filled with nitrous oxide with the other. He was found conscious in the the wreckage, but 'dazed and confused', while his two passengers were unconscious.

Ms Yusuf was pronounced dead about two hours later. Mr Sufi has suffered a catalogue of serious injuries, and needs a hip replacement.

Jillani suffered a brain injury in the crash. He later told police he had no memory of the incident.

He had no previous convictions and had an 'impeccable' driving record. Today (October 4), Jillani, of Wilmslow Road, Rusholme, was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court after previously pleading guilty to causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving.

Judge Alan Conrad KC jailed him for eight years and eight months. He was also banned from driving for nine years and ten weeks.
