David de Gea confirms Manchester United exit as Reds positive about Andre Onana deal

Here are your Saturday evening Manchester United headlines.

De Gea exit

David de Gea has confirmed he has left Manchester United after his contract expired last week.

The 32-year-old wrote on his social media channels: "I just wanted to send this farewell message to all Manchester United supporters. I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love from the last 12 years.

"We’ve achieved a lot since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club. I took incredible pride everytime I pulled on this shirt, to lead the team, to represent this institution, the biggest club in the world was an honour only bestows upon a few lucky footballers. It’s been an unforgettable and successful period since I came here.

"I didn’t think from leaving Madrid as a young boy we would achieve what we did together. Now, it’s the right time to undertake a new challenge, to push myself again in new surroundings."

Onana deal

Manchester United are optimistic about the prospect of signing Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana to replace David de Gea.

Onana, 27, is United's principal goalkeeping target and De Gea confirmed he has left the club for good on Saturday.

United sources insist no contract was ever formally offered to De Gea, 32, despite months of discussions. De Gea's contract expired last week and United initially wanted to hold face-to-face discussions.

The Manchester Evening News reported on Friday United are at a more advanced stage to sign a new goalkeeper than a striker.

Sources say a deal for Onana is not imminent and a compromise is required on Inter's asking price for the former Ajax 'keeper but positive discussions have been held.
