Wetherspoons pub evacuated after heavy downpours batter Greater Manchester

A popular Wetherspoons pub has been evacuated after Manchester was battered by downpours. Storms have hit the city tonight (July 8), with heavy rain along with thunder and lightning.

Flooding has been reported in some areas, including parts of the M60 motorway. Pubgoers have also been unable to escape the dismal weather in one south Manchester local.

The Sedge Lynn on Manchester Road, Chorlton, was evacuated this evening after being flooded following this evening's stormy weather. Parts of the pub's floor became waterlogged while an alarm sounded inside as punters were asked to leave by staff, who hope the pub will be back open as normal tomorrow.

A spokesperson for JD Wetherspooon said: "Following torrential rain earlier the pub flooded through some high level windows setting off alarms and tripping electrics. A clear up is underway and pub should open as normal tomorrow."

Rain is forecast to continue in Manchester later tonight, with more thunder and lightning expected at midnight, according to the Met Office. The storm is expected to make way for dry weather from around 1am.
