David Beckham admits he never got on with Manchester United assistant manager

David Beckham has admitted he "never got on" with the former Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz.

Queiroz joined United in the summer of 2002 as Sir Alex Ferguson's new assistant a year after Steve McClaren had left to take over as manager of Middlesbrough.

The 2002-03 season proved to be Beckham's last at United as he was sold to Real Madrid for £25million after his working relationship with Ferguson deteriorated.

Ferguson accidentally kicked a boot at Beckham after the FA Cup fifth round defeat to Arsenal in February 2003 and the then-England captain was an unused substitute for the pivotal trip to Arsenal in April and then dropped for the return leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid.

Beckham had enjoyed the coaching styles of Ferguson's previous assistants Brian Kidd and McClaren, who was also part of Sven-Goran Eriksson's England backroom staff between 2001-06, but Queiroz was a more officious personality.

Ironically, Queiroz was appointed the Real coach the same summer Beckham moved to the Bernabeu but, in the Netflix docuseries Beckham, the six-times Premier League winner's misgivings about Queiroz are laid bare.

"Carlos Queiroz, who I knew nothing about, knew nothing of, didn't understand how he came in, but he did," Beckham says. "I never got on with him."

Queiroz contributes to the docuseries in an original interview where he echoes Ferguson's issues about Beckham's celebrity status, recalling a Pepsi advert the United great appeared in.
