Erik ten Hag makes Andre Onana comparison with Manchester United greats David de Gea and Peter Schmeichel

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has likened Andre Onana's start at the club to that of predecessors David de Gea and Peter Schmeichel.

Onana's fumble led to Mathias Jensen's opening goal for Brentford in United's late win at Old Trafford in what was the latest mistake by the error-prone £47.2million signing.

The 27-year-old let in a number of saveable shots in his 10 games for United, who have conceded 18 goals so far this season.

David de Gea sieved 17 goals in his first 10 United appearances in 2011 while Sir Alex Ferguson said Peter Schmeichel "squealed like a pig" over Wimbledon's rumbustious tactics in 1991.

"He knows, we know he will do much better," Ten Hag stressed of Onana, "and as every player who's coming into the Premier League, you need an integration period.

"But he has to step up. Big United keepers like Peter Schmeichel, like David de Gea, they also started not too good. That is good to know for Andre, a little bit from history.

"But we live now, we live in the future and he has to make his future by giving better performances. I'm sure he will do. He showed it so many times in big clubs at Barcelona when he was young, Ajax, Inter Milan.

"He was in the semi-final and final of the Champions League, he is a great player. I'm sure he will give us performances and I'm sure we will have a lot of joy from him."
