England legend disagrees with Alan Shearer point about Manchester United icon David Beckham's documentary

Former England and Manchester United striker Michael Owen believes David Beckham 'let England down' after getting sent off during the 1998 World Cup.

United legend Beckham was shown a straight red card for kicking out at Diego Simeone during England's last-16 clash against Argentina in France. The score was 2-2 at the time, with a young Owen on the scoresheet alongside Alan Shearer for the Three Lions.

Argentina went on to win the match on penalties and Beckham received a torrent of abuse upon returning to England. In his recently released Netflix documentary, the midfielder reflected on seeing burning effigies and being spat at on the street, with manager Hoddle doing little to calm the storm afterwards as he pointed the finger at the Reds man.

Shearer was England captain at that time and insists Beckham did not let down his country.

"No, it wasn’t his fault we didn’t go through," he told The Rest Is Football podcast. "It wasn’t his fault, (Paul) Ince or (David) Batty missed their penalties, not at all. But we would have had a much better chance with him on the pitch. It is what it is. I don’t blame him at all, we all made mistakes on the pitch that we regret."

But that viewpoint is not shared by all who were involved in that tournament. Owen was Shearer's main strike partner in France and enjoyed a breakthrough international spell at just 18 years old. And the former Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle and United striker has admitted he still harbours resentment towards Beckham for his actions during that game.
