Danny Murphy uses Celtic Champions League exit to land SPFL jab as pundit tells Hoops why they can't compete

Danny Murphy has taken a Scottish football potshot as he weighed in on Celtic's Champions League campaign.

Two late goals from Ciro Immobile sent Brendan Rodgers' side tumbling out of Europe's top competition with a 2-0 defeat, eliminated before matchday six for the second consecutive campaign. They play Feyenoord at Parkhead in their final match of the group stage in Europe, with third and Europa League football also now out of reach.

Rodgers made the call for quality in the aftermath of defeat in Rome and admitted Celtic needed an extra touch of star power if they were to come out on top at the highest level. But former Liverpool midfielder Murphy has linked their plight on the continent back to what they are facing week-to-week in Scotland. He believes the Premiership champions- who drew 1-1 with Motherwell at home on Saturday - and Rangers can't attract the type of player who could shine in the Champions League due to the week-to-week challenges not being tough enough in Scotland.

He told talkSPORT: “I think, if you want to compete at Champions League level, you need more quality than Celtic have. The problem with that is that it costs money, but they only pay a certain level of wages.

"And, you can only entice a certain level of player to Celtic or Rangers because they’re playing in a league that’s nowhere near as exciting or competitive as most of the other leagues in Europe.”
