The south coast side have had a frustrating season so far, with Pompey currently 12th in the League One table and 12 points away from the play-off places.
Defeat to Charlton last time out made it five games without a win, whilst Cowley’s squad was stretched further after Shaun Williams was forced off with a back injury that could see him set for a spell out.
Nevertheless, BBC reporter Andrew Moon has revealed after speaking to Cowley that the former Lincoln chief doesn’t expect to go into the market to beef up what is a small squad.
“Head Coach Danny Cowley says he is not looking at the free agent market. He suspects Pompey will have the smallest squad in the division.”
Things aren’t about to get any easier for Portsmouth as they travel to take on an Oxford United side that are currently occupying the final play-off place in the third tier.
The verdict
The fact Cowley went on to mention that he thinks he will be working with the smallest squad in the league suggests it’s something that he’s not too happy about and you can understand his frustration.
In truth, the Pompey squad are lacking quality and depth in a few positions and that’s reflected by the fact they’re off the pace in the play-off race.
However, you can understand why they don’t want to go after free agents as they may not be a long-term answer, whilst the January injury is tough, so it could mean a busy summer awaits.
