Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang responds to Xavi criticism after signing for Barcelona
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is confident he will fit perfectly into Barcelona’s style of play, despite his current manager Xavi having previously aired his concerns that the former Arsenal captain wasn’t suited to the Catalan giants.
The Gabon international completed his acrimonious departure from the Gunners on a frantic deadline day earlier this week, which ultimately saw him leave by mutual consent following the deterioration of his relationship with Mikel Arteta.
Aubameyang is now keen to put that chapter of his career behind him andfocus on helping his new club climb back up the table and secure a top four place.
The 32-year-old will now link up with Xavi at the Nou Camp, but the Barcelona legend has previously had doubts that the forward would thrive at the Spanish club.
Discussing possible Barca signings in May 2020 – long before his managerial appointment – Xavi said: ‘[Sadio] Mane and Aubameyang can kill you in open space. But Barcelona need players who know how to move in small spaces.
‘I am thinking about players who would adapt to Barcelona and it’s not easy to find one.’
Addressing those comments at his unveiling on Thursday, Aubameyang revealed he had spoken to Xavi ahead of completing his move and has no doubt that he will return to goalscoring form at his new club after a difficult final few months at Arsenal.
