If you are good enough, you are old enough. It’s one of the most famous sayings in football and Sir Matt Busby’s line is still on the walls of Old Trafford.

You only have to look at Spain at the Euros and the performances of Lamine Jamal to see it in action, with the 16-year-old taking the tournament by storm. I just hope he’s quiet tomorrow night, mind you but there’s a lot of talk about youth players at Celtic right now – and the fact they can’t seem to keep hold of them. Brendan Rodgers was pretty strong with his choice of words to newspaper journalists in midweek when discussing the situation surrounding Daniel Kelly.

The 18-year-old won’t be part of his pre-season plans after failing to sign a lucrative new deal as he could be away for free at the end of his contract in January. In isolation, the news might have been met with a shrug by supporters. He’s a young lad who had made just a handful of appearances and if he’s got itchy feet then fair enough.

But it’s not an isolated incident. There seems to be a pattern at Parkhead of prospects jumping ship even before they’ve made a name for themselves.

Plenty of supporters blame the club. These kids are not getting offered enough money, they are not getting enough game time, etc, etc. I’m not buying it. I actually have some sympathy for Celtic here. What are they meant to do? Slap these youngsters on eight year deals like the ones Jim McLean made infamous at Dundee United back in the day? Do they padlock the gates of Lennoxtown? Chuck them in the side for the sake of it?

No. That’s not how it works. If these kids get their heads turned and think they are best served elsewhere, then there’s not a lot that can do.
