Cumbernauld Colts boss' relief as his side digs deep to hold on to cup win

Cumbernauld Colts boss David Proctor says Saturday’s 4-3 win over Linlithgow Rose was good for the neutral, but not for him as they had to dig deep to progress in the South Challenge Cup.

An Ashton Pellow double and strikes from Callum Wilson and Danny Hatfield mean that Colts will travel to Arniston Rangers in the second round on September 14, and Proctor is happy to still be in the competition.

He said: “In the last 20 minutes it was end to end and we had to dig deep just to make sure we maintained that lead.

“Linlithgow Rose are a very good team, they’ve got off to a very good start, so we had to make sure we kept their bigger players quiet, and the goals we scored were well-worked.

“It was a really good game for the neutral, but when you score four goals you hope it’s going to be more comfortable than holding on for the last five minutes of a cup tie when they’re throwing the kitchen sink at you.

“But overall it was a really good afternoon, and probably just rewards for some of the performances we’ve been putting in, but perhaps not getting the results that we’ve deserved.

“Hopefully this is a catalyst, now.”

Colts are due to visit Cowdenbeath tonight (Tuesday) before hosting Berwick Rangers at Broadwood on Saturday, both in the Lowland League.

Proctor said: “It’s two big games for us, and we’re looking to get points on the board.

“We’re missing three big attacking threats in Craig Malcolm, Cole McIntyre and Billy Mortimer, but Ashton Pellow has stepped up from the under-20s.”
