Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe delighted with SPFL Trust Trophy win

Rhys McCabe reckons Airdrie are getting back to their pre-season best, following a 3-0 SPFL Trust Trophy win at Queen of the South.

Goals from Adam Frizzell, Chris Mochrie and Lewis McGregor comfortably saw the Championship side through to the fourth-round draw.

League One side Queen of the South offered little resistance, though Harvey Walker hit the post with a curling shot in 34 minutes.

McCabe was pleased with the win and performance in Dumfries, as his side gears up for a clash at home to Falkirk next weekend.

He told the club’s website: “I thought the performance merited the result.

“We were comfortable winners in the end, and I thought we showed signs of early on in pre-season and the Premier Sports Cup fixtures when we were doing really well.

“I’m really chuffed for everyone. The back four, with five minutes to go and you’re comfortable in the game, but they’re determined to keep that clean sheet.

“Overall it was a really strong performance.”

Queen of the South did have some menace and McCabe says he had to fix some things at the interval.

He said: “It [their long throw-ins] definitely gave us a few things to think about, but I thought the boys dealt with it relatively well in the first half.

“I addressed a few wee things at half-time, and then in the second half we looked much more aggressive and comfortable in dealing with that.

“I think they had a shot off the post in the first half and, apart from that, we limited them to next to nothing.”

Airdrie opened the scoring in nine minutes when Ben Wilson’s free kick clipped the defensive wall and flew into the path of Adam Frizzell, who headed into the net.

Mochrie rounded keeper Jay Hogarth two minutes later, but hit the post.
