Cost of League One promotion to Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich Town and Derby County revealed

The rebuilding process has already started at Sheffield Wednesday this summer. Several first team players will soon leave the club following Darren Moore's end-of-season cull.

There will be plenty of new faces recruited over the coming weeks as Moore seeks to build on their fourth-placed finish last term. Wednesdayites have their sights set on an automatic promotion push after watching their side fall short in the play-offs.

Moore is well aware of the size of the task facing the Owls in the 2022/23 season. League One has as become something of a graveyard for former Premier League clubs. Barnsley, Bolton Wanderers, Ipswich Town, Portsmouth and Derby County will be among the clubs heading to Hillsborough next term.

"League One has respect for nobody," said Moore. "It’s a demanding and challenging division and there’s lots of variation in terms of how teams set up and play.

“When you look at the top teams from last season, we all have different styles and there’s no right or wrong way for success in this league. Last season, there were eight former Premier League teams in the division, it shows the stature of clubs in League One.

“But reputations hold no bearing, you have to perform. Only three can get promoted and there’s no God-given right for the former Premier League clubs to succeed."

It costs a promoted club on average of £3 million to get out of the third tier, according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire. That figure is almost a tenth of what it costs to win promotion from the Championship.
