Controversy and confusion in Longford club scene

Controversy continues to reign in the Longford Senior Football Championship, with Carrickedmond making the late call to pull out of their relegation play-off against Longford Slashers on Saturday night.

The club made the decision in the wake of the Leinster GAA Hearings Committee's verdict earlier in the day to uphold Carrickedmond's appeal over their encounter with Mullinalaghta last Sunday.

That match finished 2-12 apiece according to referee David Tiernan.

However, Mullinalaghta were adamant that the score had been miscounted and they had won the game 2-12 to 2-11, a belief borne out by the recorded footage of the game.

Referee David Tiernan noted in his report to the county board that the scoreline should have read 2-12 to 2-11 to Mullinalaghta.

The initial result spurred an objection from Mullinalaghta, one that resulted in Longford CCC unanimously awarding a one-point win to the north Longford side.

However, Carrickedmond's successful counter-appeal has thrown the championship into disarray.

The club quarter-finals in the county will all be completed this weekend without Carrickedmond, despite the result of today's Leinster GAA Hearings Committee's appeal.

As if the waters couldn't be mudied any further, the Leinster GAA Hearings Committee itself has requested a new hearing takes place with Longford CCC on the matter.

Carrickedmond, with hopes of still winning a county championship they had been knocked out of until earlier today, made a request for their encounter with Longford Slashers be postponed, but Longford CCC denied it.
