Compstall Mill fire LIVE: Emergency services on scene of large blaze - updates

Emergency services are responding to a large blaze in a mill in Greater Manchester this evening.

Greater Manchester FIre and Rescue Service have been called to Compstall Mill, near Stockport, tonight. A number of emergency service crews are on the scene.

Pictures show flames in the top floor of the building, with the blaze estimated to have started around 9.30pm.

One person said: "Compstall Mill in Compstall Stockport is on fire. There are 7 fire engines and around 5 police cars. HART team arrived on scene just now."

Another witness said the blaze seemed to break out at around 9.40pm.

GMFRS say crews are responding to the blaze in the derelict mill, with the top floor currently alight.

The fire is now out but crews remain at the scene damping down. A cordon remains in place and people are being urged to avoid the area for now

No injuries or casualties have been reported as of yet, the fire service spokesman said

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) has just released a statement on the incident.

A spokesperson said:

At around 9.40pm on Friday 1 March, GMFRS crews were called to reports of a fire at a derelict mill on Compstall Road, Stockport.

Five fire engines from Marple, Offerton, Hyde, Whitehill and Stockport fire stations quickly attended the incident. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels to extinguish the fire, which had spread to the top floor of the mill.

A cordon is in place and Compstall Road is closed near the incident. People should avoid the area if possible.

Firefighters remain at the scene dampening down the remaining hot spots. GMFRS will continue working
