Chris Sutton skewers Steven Gerrard's Rangers legacy as 'huge success' claim doesn't fly with Celtic hero

Steven Gerrard's Rangers tenure has been put under the microscope in an English football transition debate - and whether he was a success or not has been questioned.

The Liverpool legend took his first steps into senior management in 2018 at Ibrox and stopped Celtic's 10-in-a-row bid in the 20/21 season that was played behind closed doors, before leaving for Aston Villa later that year. Ange Postecoglou is the latest manager to transition from Scotland to England, having left current Premiership champions Celtic for Tottenham, where he is earning plenty of plaudits for the style of play he's implemented.

Speaking on the 'It's all Coming Up' podcast, host Ian Ladyman and Record Sport columnist Chris Sutton had a closer look at Gerrard's Rangers stint amid the Angeball hype train down south. It was brought up by Ladyman that the former midfielder found it difficult to translate from success in Scotland to the Premier League - lasting less than a year at Villa - and it got Celtic's former striker attention.

He replied: "What, one trophy out of nine? Was that success? St Johnstone won more trophies in the period Steven Gerrard was there. You said he was a huge success, one trophy out of nine, is that a success? He stopped Celtic's 10-in-a-row and did well to do that. But to say he was a huge success..."

It was then put to Sutton with the context of where Rangers where when Gerrard took over. Sutton then cheekily replied: "It was the Covid season, wasn't it? Less pressure.

"It was the Covid season, you can't dispute that. Over the piece he did a pretty decent job stopping Celtic's 10. I think your words were a brilliant job. He won one trophy out of nine and once again, you are missing the point of what expectations are if
