Chatham Town’s Matty Macarthur on scoring the winner against Carlisle United in the FA Trophy and bouncing back after leaving Gillingham
Matty Macarthur spoke of his determination to work his way back up the ranks after sealing a famous win for Chatham Town on Saturday.
Macarthur dropped into non-league after a year as a professional at Gillingham, but he’s made a great impact since signing at Chatham in late October.
The Sydney-born forward – once a junior at Southampton – wrote his name in Chats’ history books with a stunning free-kick in the FA Trophy win over Carlisle United.
His goal was the only one in the fourth-round tie, finding the net from 25-yards.
“It was an amazing feeling,” he said, after scoring the winner.
“I'm over the moon. I just want to get minutes and prove myself, really. That's the most important thing for me.
“Scoring goals as an attacker, or assisting them, is key for me in making my way up the ranks.
“I'm just so thankful that I get the opportunity to play, to take the free-kicks, and obviously I scored, and it was a great feeling.
“I'm thankful to Chatham for taking me in. They've got a good set-up here, full-time football, which I think personally I need as a young lad. Everything's working out at the moment, which is great.”
Macarthur joined Chats in late October from National South side Enfield Town, finally signing for the club after they had made several attempts previously.
Since leaving the Gills, where he had completed a youth scholarship before signing pro forms, he’s been at a number of non-league clubs, including Kent sides Dartford and Tonbridge Angels.
