Chatham Town manager Kevin Hake’s reaction to a 1-0 loss against Southend United in the FA Trophy

Chatham Town’s manager was proud of his players’ efforts as their FA Trophy run ended on Saturday - but was less than impressed by the officials.

Kevin Hake’s men pushed National League opponents Southend United all the way in their fifth-round match at the Bauvill Stadium, losing 1-0, after conceding from a penalty that had been saved.

Report: Chatham 0 Southend 1

Chats thought they had snatched a last-gasp equaliser when the ball appeared to have crossed the line. The officials weren’t sure and eventually ruled it out.

Hake was keen to highlight the standout efforts of his players but felt aggrieved at that big late decision.

He said: “I don't want the focus to be on the referee, because that would just be pointless.

“The focus should be on the boys who have taken the club into the last 16 of a national competition for the first time in history.

“I couldn't be more proud of the guys.

“We conceded one goal in the competition, one goal in six games, and it's a rebounded penalty. I think I'll take that.

“We lost the game but hopefully we put a few smiles on the supporters’ faces.

“They came out in their droves to come and see us. I respect that. I know my team respects that.

“We've gone against a top National League team with a top budget. We've gone toe-to-toe with them. They know they were in the game.”

Chatham had the chance to go ahead themselves from the penalty spot but Matty Macarthur’s first-half effort was saved.

“I think he struck it well,” said the manager. “It was a good save from the goalkeeper.

“It's always hard and sometimes it's just fine margins.”

Southend had a penalty of their own in the second half, saved by Nathan Harvey, but the ball spun back in front of the kicker, allowing him an easy finish.
