Charlie Goode sends message to Sheffield United supporters following red card against Blackburn Rovers

Sheffield United centre-back Charlie Goode has taken to Twitter to apologise to his current side’s supporters following his red card against Blackburn Rovers yesterday evening, consigning him to a suspension.

With Chris Basham now on the sidelines in the Blades’ latest injury blow, the Brentford loan man to called up to make his first start for Paul Heckingbottom’s men, a real baptism of fire for the 26-year-old against a fellow high-flyer in Tony Mowbray’s men.

They may not have had top scorer Ben Brereton Diaz at their disposal – but they still had several capable attacking options in John Buckley, Sam Gallagher and Reda Khadra who all started at Bramall Lane – with Tyrhys Dolan and Ryan Hedges on the bench.

The game was in the balance up until the 66th minute, when Goode lunged in dangerously on Khadra right in front of Blackburn boss Mowbray, a challenge that proved to be too strong for the referee as he gave the centre-back his marching orders.

This has gone on to deepen their crisis in defence with teenager Kyron Gordon being promoted to the bench in the absence of Basham and Jack O’Connell – and fellow defenders Jayden Bogle and Enda Stevens also out of action currently.

Fortunately for the Brentford defender and his loan side, his dismissal didn’t prove to be costly and they went on to win the game with Ben Davies firing home a winner from close range in stoppage time.

Nonetheless, it was a night of showing remorse for Goode who publicly held his hands up after leaving his team at a numerical disadvantage.

Taking to Twitter yesterday night after the match, he posted: “Lads have dug me out tonight and got an incredible result.

“Apologies for my sending off, take full responsibility, I’ll hold my hands up for that.
