Gary Rowett explains tactics behind Millwall’s win at Derby County

Millwall picked up a third successive win in the league at Derby County on Tuesday evening to reduce the gap between themselves and the play-offs to seven points.

Jed Wallace and Tyler Burey saw the Lions into a two goal lead inside half an hour, and that is the way it stayed until Jake Cooper’s 88th minute own goal produced a grandstand finish.

It has been a familiar tale for the Lions this season, flirting with the top six at times but being unable to sustain a run good enough to take their push deep into the campaign.

Wallace remaining at the club was a huge plus for the squad, and the chances of the 27-year-old signing a new contract, rather than leaving for free in the summer, seem to be slowly increasing as Premier League interested has slowed down.

Gary Rowett had spotted weaknesses to exploit in the way Derby play and his side carried that out to perfection at Pride Park.

The former Derby manager explained his game plan for the fixture when he spoke to DerbyshireLive.

Rowett said: “I thought we pressed really well in good areas, we worked very hard at working out some of their patterns because some of them are very unusual in the way their midfielders roll out into wide areas and the way the full back pushes really high to occupy your five, but I thought we did it really well.

“We felt we could just transition in behind those areas where the full backs just leave the spaces.

“We have got no centre forward at the moment, really, but we have got three quick, mobile forward players and I thought first half you saw that.

“We scored with a good free kick, I think Mason (Bennett) just takes the keeper’s eye away from the ball and it ends up in the far corner.
