There was 'chaos' on the motorway with roads closed by police after a huge car meet moved across Greater Manchester on Sunday night (August 20).

Police say up to 200 souped-up sports cars took part in the illegal get together, which began in a car park in Pilsworth, Bury at about 7pm, before then travelling through Middleton and into Manchester and Trafford.

However, one man, who asked to remain anonymous but attended the car meet, claimed that the 'chaotic' scenes were mainly caused by police officers closing numerous roads, including an exit slip lane on the M62 and that it did 'more harm than good'.

Speaking following the meet, Greater Manchester Police PC Oliver Garner sent a message out to people who attended the event, warning their actions 'create risk' and pointing to 'tragic events from previous similar meets. He added: “These car meets are illegal and are not safely managed, they put lives at risk not just for those who attend these meets but the for the innocent public who are on the roads as well."

In total, three vehicles were seized and more than 50 drivers will be prosecuted for taking part Sunday night's activities that police say 'puts lives at risk' and causes danger on the roads.

Video footage shared with the Manchester Evening News captured the congested scenes, particularly on the M62 beside a service station, the M62 near Middleton and also along the Trafford Boulevard, near the Trafford Centre, after cars moved to a nearby retail park.
