Celtic and Motherwell being joint-top is great, but we won't get carried away, says star

Motherwell won’t get carried away with being joint-top of the Premiership – because boss Stuart Kettlewell won’t let them, according to hero Callum Slattery.

The midffielder bagged the Steelmen’s winner in their 1-0 win over Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday, despite being down to 10 men for over 20 minutes of the second half, following Paul McGinn’s red card.

That put them level on points with champions Celtic, who boast a slightly better goal-difference, but Slattery says all they’ve done is provide a platform.

He said: “That’s all it is, a foundation.

“We won’t really get too caught up in the table.

“The manager drums it into us to take each game as it comes and that’s what we will do. We won’t get carried away.

“The win was nice but we have to come back after the international break and continue that form.”

Slattery struck in 29 minutes, collecting a slide-rule pass from Blair Spittal before smashing it past Zander Clark and into the corner.

The Englishman was initially denied by an offside flag, but VAR then proved that Alex Cochrane was playing him on, and it was a nice feeling to celebrate three valuable points.

He said: “When I put it in the back of the net and the ref blew, I thought ‘what’s he blown for?’

“But you can never chance it, so I had to wait, and fortunately he [referee Grant Irvine] gave it.

“It was nice. There’s many ways you can win a game, and going down to 10 men, we had to dig deep and put our bodies on the line.

“I think we did that great, which speaks volumes about the team sticking together, and the team spirit we have at the moment and will continue to have.

“It’s confidence as well, with the results going our way in the past couple of weeks – it gives you that confidence, going into a game.
