Carter Vickers the fall guy as Celtic hero lampooned over USA display but others blame former Parkhead winger

Celtic stalwart Cameron Carter-Vickers has been lambasted for his display in the USA's Copa America defeat to Panama.

The Hoops centre-back won a spot in Gregg Berhalter's squad for the prestige tournament following an outstanding campaign in the Scottish Premiership, with the 26-year-old playing a crucial role in Brendan Rodgers ' side winning a third consecutive domestic title. But Carter-Vickers' commanding form seems to have deserted him when it comes to international football, with several high-profile pundits criticising his showing after coming on as a half-time substitute at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Carter-Vickers - who came on at the break for Gio Reyna - was singled out for disparaging comments from carping pundits following Panama's shock 2-1 victory over the hosts. Former Fulham striker Brian McBride told Golazo America: "Across the backline, Antonee Robinson is the only one I give a grade to in this match to be honest. Cameron Carter-Vickers - whatever that lowest grade is we want to give a player, he was poor in the game and almost cost the U.S. before."

Ex- Celtic winger Timo Weah was also criticised following the full-time whistle following his red card after just eight minutes, and the result means the US are now likely to require all three points in their next outing against in-form Uruguay if they want to keep their hopes of progressing in the competition alive.
