Carlton Palmer hits nail on the head with Sheffield Wednesday issue Darren Moore must address

Sheffield Wednesday are braced for a hectic transfer window. It is understood the Owls are in dialogue with a number of targets as they aim to build a squad capable of challenging for automatic promotion next season.

There is plenty of work for Darren Moore to do to get Wednesday in good shape heading into the 2022/23 season, which gets underway at the end of July. The Owls chief and his recruitment team are working overtime behind the scenes to line up deals ahead of the transfer window officially opening this Friday.

There are several areas of the team Moore must address before the big kick-off. Central midfield is arguably the only position where Moore has an abundance of options at his disposal.

Moore is targeting attacking reinforcements. Hull City's Mallik Wilks is the latest player to be linked with a move to Hillsborough.

There were times last year when the Owls relied heavily on Lee Gregory to do the business in front of goal. The former Millwall and Stoke City player was one of their top performers and found the back of the net on 17 occasions.

A lack of cutting edge at the top end of the pitch definitely cost Wednesday points, at times, last season. Moore was frequently left bemoaning their wastefulness in front of goal.

Bar Gregory, the rest of Moore's forward line struggled to produce the goods on a consistent basis. Saido Berahino, Callum Paterson, Josh Windass, Florian Kamberi and Sylla Sow contributed 24 goals between them.

With Berahino and Kamberi having departed following the climax of the 2021/22 season, there will be a different look to the attack next year. Ex-Owls midfielder Carlton Palmer has tipped his old club to sign two new strikers.
