Cameroon dressing room footage of Manchester United's Andre Onana doesn't reveal the full story

There was a wide grin across Andre Onana's face as Cameroon celebrated reaching the knockout rounds of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Although Onana was dropped to the bench for Tuesday's game against Gambia, the Manchester United goalkeeper was still part of the celebrations in the dressing room and the president of the Cameroon Football Federation, Samuel Eto'o, was just a few yards away from where he sat below his locker.

There is footage of Eto'o, formerly of Barcelona and Inter Milan, fighting back tears after a dramatic game that saw his nation win 3-2 thanks to two goals in the dying minutes.

Eto'o is a visible presence around the Cameroon camp and there were suggestions he was the reason Onana withdrew from the Qatar World Cup and retired from international duty.

There were reports of a 'broken relationship' with Onana and it was claimed he'd never play again with Eto'o still as president, but he returned to international football in September.

"Faced with manipulation, lies and abuse of power, I choose to remain faithful to my ideal, proudly representing a country that deserves our sincere commitment," Onana wrote.

Erik ten Hag was unable to confirm whether Onana would represent Cameroon at the tournament in multiple press conferences and he intentionally did not give much away.

A few weeks before AFCON began, it was finally confirmed that Onana would feature in the tournament, but it was agreed he would join up with Cameroon at a later date.

Onana feared he could lose his status as the first-choice goalkeeper during his time away from Manchester and talks were held to defer his call-up.
