Burton 2-2 Cardiff City: Alex Robertson brace not enough as Bluebirds held after late leveller

Alex Robertson's brace wasn't enough for Cardiff City at Burton Albion, with the 2-2 draw at the Pirelli Stadium allowing the Bluebirds' rivals to gain ground in the League One title race.

Robertson's second-half double looked to be enough for Brian Barry-Murphy's side, but Kyran Lofthouse's goal 12 minutes from time denied them all three points in Staffordshire.

The Brewers came into this having won just one in six, finding themselves in the relegation places. However, having already beaten Cardiff in the Welsh capital earlier in the season, an unlikely double was on the cards.

It was certainly the home side who started the brighter.

From the off, Cardiff's backline was peppered with high balls and long throw-ins.

Kain Adom showed some early glimpses. One early chance nearly fell to him from a corner, while minutes later he stole possession from Calum Chambers but couldn't find a finish to match.

His strike-partner Jake Beesley was just as much of a thorn in Cardiff's side early on, albeit in the air.

Indeed, it was Beesley who would break the deadlock after 11 minutes.

After a long throw-in caused all sorts of problems for the Bluebirds, Lofthouse's deflected strike found its way to the forward - who found the net with an acrobatic finish.

The goal seemed to wake Cardiff up, with the visitors growing into the game gradually from them on.

Perry Ng was the pick of the bunch, with his range of passing becoming more of an asset as Cardiff began to enjoy more possession.

One delightful diagonal ball found Chris Willock in space, with the wing turning Lofthouse inside and out - only to be denied what looked a corner kick.
