Burnley's transfer thinking as move for Liverpool prospect gathers pace

Burnley have just over three weeks left in what will go down as one of the club's busiest ever transfer windows.

The Clarets have already signed 10 senior players and seen 13 depart in what has been a summer of turnover. And new boss Vincent Kompany isn't finished yet with the Burnley chief keen to strengthen further.

He'll hope the majority of outgoing deals have now been completed and the focus can turn to putting the finishing touches to his squad and getting down to the business of ensuring he has a competitive Championship team. While attack is the area of concern for supporters, Kompany is seeking to add another defender to his ranks.

Links for Liverpool's Sepp van den Berg have intensified in recent days and the prospect of the 20-year-old defender joining seems likely. The Ductchman has spent the last 18 months on loan at Preston North End, impressing for the Lilywhites.

And Kompany is seeking competition for places at the back and, despite bringing in Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Luke McNally and CJ Egan-Riley, wants another option. With the latter two having yet to feature for the Clarets since their summer arrivals as they bed in and adjust to a new level, Charlie Taylor has been playing in the centre of the back four.

Kompany sees this as a potential long-term solution but the ideal scenario for the boss is to have Taylor competing at left back with Ian Maatsen and adding an extra option in the middle. That would likely spell the end of Kevin Long's Turf Moor career with van den Berg seen as a more progressive ball player and having second tier experience under his belt.
