Bryan Mbeumo makes 'shock' Man United transfer U-turn as talks advance for £40m move
Manchester United's wait to sign Bryan Mbeumo has gone on longer than supporters would have hoped for. After signing Matheus Cunha at the start of the window, United are yet to add further to Ruben Amorim's squad.
Mbeumo has been the subject of a failed bid by United but they remain confident in getting the deal over the line. Further business is expected to be completed before the window closes in September.
The list of players being linked with a move to Old Trafford continues to grow with Genk's Tolu Arokodare the latest striker on their radar. With that in mind, The Manchester Evening News takes a look at some of the latest headlines surrounding United.
It's understood that United are confident of finalising a move for Mbeumo this summer. However, journalist Duncan Castles has dropped a bombshell update that won't please supporters.
Speaking on The Transfers Podcast, Castles has claimed that Tottenham could now be viewed as a more attractive option for the 25-year-old. Should both teams submit offers worth £70million, Brentford's reported asking price, it's suggested that Spurs could win the battle.
The chance to play in the Champions League and reunite with Thomas Frank is said to be two contributing factors.
MEN Sport's Josh Holland says: "This would be a complete disaster for United. After seeming to be in the driving seat to add Mbeumo to Cunha, they face missing out on him completely.
"The difference in their valuation of the attacker compared to Brentford's still needs sorting out. But the ball was always in United's court due to the player's preference to move to Old Trafford. If the report is true and Mbeumo is now open to a move to Tottenham, it would be the first blow of the window."
