Bristol City player closing in on Barnsley transfer switch

Bristol City centre-back Robbie Cundy is set to sign for League One outfit Barnsley on a permanent basis, according to BristolLive.

The 25-year-old was offered a new contract by the Robins to extend his stay at the club, having signed three years ago from non-league outfit Bath City.

However, Cundy is set to drop down a level and head north to the Tykes, with potentially more first-team football on offer for the defender.

Cundy will sign a three-year contract at Oakwell under new manager Michael Duff once he completes a medical, in a move which will bolster Barnsley’s defence which was leaky during the 2021-22 Championship season as they were relegated to the third tier.

In his time at Ashton Gate, Cundy played just 13 league games for City, with all of those coming in the second half of the most recent campaign under Nigel Pearson.

Prior to that, Cundy had been loaned out to four different clubs since his arrival, with stints at Exeter City, Cambridge United, Torquay United and Gillingham before finally making his Robins breakthrough.

His time is set to come to an end however, with Barnsley winning the race for his signature.

The Verdict

When it’s all said and done, Cundy likely has made this move to guarantee himself first-team football for the next few years.

It took him a while to finally get his opportunity at Ashton Gate, and despite starting the final 10 matches of last season, the chances are that Cundy would be a backup in the 2022-23 season.

Kal Naismith has already arrived to bolster the back-line and other centre-halves have been linked as well, and with Cundy now at the age of 25, now is the time to find a club where he will play week in, week out.
