Brett Hodgson opens up on Hull FC recruitment plans, conversations and off-contract players

Hull FC’s recruitment plans for next season are already starting to take shape, Brett Hodgson has confirmed. The Black and Whites will be able to sign players from other clubs from the start of next month and they’ve already identified some targets.

As reported by Hull Live this morning, Leeds Rhinos back-rower Alex Mellor is understood to be one of those FC are keeping an eye on as his contract at Headingley enters its final few months. Hull are also thought to have been monitoring Jake Trueman’s situation at Castleford Tigers, too, ahead of a potential approach.

Hodgson didn’t mention names when asked about the situation in his pre-Hull derby press conference, but the head coach did admit the recruitment process started some time ago at the MKM Stadium.

"We've been having conversations regarding recruitment for the last two or three months in terms of next season and if not before that," Hodgson said. “We're aware of who is out of contract as has been documented in most places at the moment.

"It's a time in the season when decisions do need to be made. We're constantly having those conversations.

“It's difficult because we're still in April and next season doesn't start for a long time. It's a difficult process but it's one that everyone has to endure.

"We're constantly having conversations and our thoughts are on what we need to change, fix, improve or maintain going forward. It's a part of it and it’s a challenging part."

He added: “We’ve got a plan and it’s important we don’t deviate from the plan regardless of results. There are some things that will need changing, I’m fully aware of that and they’re the tough parts of the job and recruitment phase.
