Brett Hodgson explains what's required against Wigan Warriors as Hull FC look to bounce back

Brett Hodgson is calling for an 80-minute performance this afternoon as his side take on Challenge Cup finalists Wigan Warriors at the MKM Stadium. The Black and Whites know all too well about the challenge that faces them today having lost by a single point to Wigan earlier in the season.

In truth, it’s a game Hull should have won, having led for periods of the game, but a couple of special moments from the Warriors’ danger man Jai Field opened FC up and allowed Harry Smith to snatch the points with a drop goal in the final minutes. Hodgson’s side took plenty from that March meeting at the DW Stadium and as they look to get back to winning ways in the Super League, they know what’s required this time around.

“They have individuals that can hurt you at any given moment,” Hodgson said when asked about today’s game. “We need to make sure that we’re honest with our defensive system throughout the game, not just for periods, it needs to be for every single minute.

“I think that’s what we saw when we played them over at Wigan. Field hurt us twice based on a lapse of concentration or someone not being in the system. I’m confident we’re in a good headspace after the response from St Helens earlier in the week so we’re looking forward to it.”

He added: “They’re the elements we’re trying to work on and I do feel even against St Helens, that we showed some quality going forward and we competed with them for a large period of that game.

“We don’t want to just compete with these big teams, we want to win but it’s a progression.”
