Brentford willing to rip up wage structure to keep Christian Eriksen at club

Brentford are willing to break their wage structure in order to keep Christian Eriksen at the club as they look to build on their impressive first season in the Premier League.

The superb performances of Eriksen helped Thomas Frank’s side to a 13th-placed finish this year and Brentford are doing everything in their power to convince the midfielder to stay in west London.

Eriksen made 11 appearances for Brentford after signing a short-term deal in January and is now a free agent going into the summer transfer window.

Having proved his fitness and quality following his cardiac arrest at last year’s European Championship, Eriksen is considering his options ahead of the new campaign.

Telegraph Sport understands Brentford have made it clear to the midfielder that they will be willing to make him comfortably the highest-paid player in the squad if he chooses to stay.

Brentford have a tightly-controlled wage bill but feel an exception can be made for Eriksen due to his experience, quality and the fact that it would not require a transfer fee to sign him.

Eriksen is known to feel settled in the area, where he has been living with his family since joining the club earlier this year, and he has fitted in seamlessly with the first-team squad.

Brentford won seven of the 10 matches in which Eriksen started this season and are hoping their progress as a team would help the 30-year-old in his ambition to play at the Qatar World Cup later this year.

Eriksen told the BBC last month he would make a decision based on a “sporting perspective but also a family perspective” and that Brentford were “definitely” in the conversation. Tottenham Hotspur, Eriksen’s former club, and Leicester City are also thought to be among the interested sides.
