Brendan Rodgers makes midfield transfer revelation as Leicester City gear up for summer refresh

Brendan Rodgers wants at least two new midfielders in the transfer window to ease the burden on his key Leicester City players.

The City boss is desperate to strengthen his options in the centre of the park, and said following the 5-1 victory over Watford that he is hoping at least two arrive during the summer. Rodgers did not have any central midfielders on his nine-man bench for the game at Vicarage Road.

This term, midfielders Youri Tielemans, James Maddison, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall make up three of City’s four most-used outfield players, with Tielemans and Dewsbury-Hall receiving very little time off during the busy schedule of the past two months. Rodgers has said he does not have enough quality to have given them regular breaks.

Elsewhere in midfield, Wilfred Ndidi is injured, while Papy Mendy had to go off at half-time at Watford with sickness. Rodgers also revealed afterwards that Hamza Choudhury has now picked up an injury, with Boubakary Soumare left out.

Asked if midfield is an area he hopes to strengthen this summer, Rodgers said: “100 per cent. My teams normally have more midfield players because of the nature of how we work to dominate that part of the field. We need that.

“There’s been too big a burden on some of our players this year. Other players have maybe not stepped up and given us the quality we need, so some of the guys have had to continually play. For sure, that’s an area I would say we need at least two.”

The manager added on his lack of midfield options on the bench: “We felt we had enough. I think it’s having players who can make an impact. Hamza’s injured so he didn’t travel. Bouba wasn’t in the squad.”
