BREAKING: Man, 76, seriously hurt after being hit by car near Aldi with driver arrested

A 76-year-old man was seriously hurt after being hit by a car in Middleton.

The man was knocked down by a Vauxhall Astra on Wood Street, near the Aldi store and Albion Inn pub, at around 1.35pm yesterday (Wednesday). He was rushed to hospital from the scene, police said.

The driver - a 63-year-old man - was arrested on the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving. He was taken into custody to be quizzed by detectives.

He has since been released on bail, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said in a statement this morning. The victim and his family are being supported by specialist officers.

A cordon was put in place on Wood Street yesterday as investigations were carried out. The road was closed for several hours with pictures showing a car with a cracked windscreen in the cordon.

Police believe the Astra was travelling up Wood Street in the direction of Eastway when it hit the man, who was crossing the road. Any witnesses are being urged to get in touch with GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

Officers also want to speak to anyone who has footage on their phone or dashcam. Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 4741 quoting log 1755 of 09/08/2023.

Alternatively, details can be shared on our LiveChat function on the website, www.gmp.police.uk or via the independent charity – Crimestoppers - anonymously on 0800 555 111.
