BREAKING: Major M62 crash causes 40-minute delays heading to Manchester - latest updates

Commuters heading towards Manchester are facing huge queues this morning after a crash on the M62 motorway. Two lanes of traffic are currently closed on the eastbound carriageway between junctions seven for St Helens and eight at Burtonwood, near Warrington.

Drivers heading towards Manchester are being faced with a 40-minute delay, with four-mile queues backing up through Merseyside towards junction six. In a post on Twitter, a spokesperson for National Highways north west wrote: "Two lanes (of three) are closed on the M62 eastbound between J7 (St Helens) and J8 (for Warrington) due to a multi-vehicle collision.

"Emergency services are in attendance. There's a 40 minute delay on approach, with four miles of congestion."

North West Motorway Police says emergency services are at the scene following the collision. Further details on the nature of the collision are yet to be confirmed. Emergency services in Cheshire and Merseyside have been approached for comment.
