BREAKING: Car bursts into flames after crash on motorway with emergency services at scene - latest updates

A car has burst into flames after a crash on the M61.

The incident happened on the southbound carriageway of the motorway near junction two for the M60. Three lanes have been closed off, according to traffic alert service Inrix.

Lanes two, three and four are currently shut. Traffic is building up to the scene.

A picture taken by an eyewitness shows one car one fire. It has not yet been confirmed whether anyone has been seriously injured.

The Manchester Evening News has contacted Greater Manchester Police, the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and the North West Ambulance Service for a comment.

In a tweet, TfGM said: "3 lanes (of 4) are closed while emergency services deal with a collision and vehicle fire. Congestion is back to J4, with delays expected to increase. Use an alternative route if possible."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said the casualties have minor injuries.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said:

"At 11.23am firefighters were called out to a road traffic collision on the M61 in Kearsley, Bolton which resulted in one car being on fire.

“One fire engine from Farnworth Fire Station quickly attended the scene where two cars had collided. One car was on fire with the driver suffering with neck and back pain, but not trapped in the vehicle. The other car had three causalities suffering with slight neck pain. All casualties are being assessed by North West Ambulance Service.
