Brazen thief walked into Greater Manchester Police's HQ, snatched an e-bike then cycled away on it

A brazen thief broke into Greater Manchester Police’s HQ before walking out with an electronic bike.

Kieran Carolan, 34, and another man, gained entry through the back fence of Central Park station before heading towards the pedal station where a number of bikes and e-bikes were kept. Both men began to push an e-bike each towards the entrance before hiding behind a lorry.

A passing detective spotted them and reported them to the police station. As two police officers rushed to check, both men fled on the electric bikes.

Carolan, of Longsight, was later arrested and released on bail. Days later he was caught after breaking into a commercial premises in Gorton with another man, causing up to £1,200 worth of damage.

Carolan, of no fixed abode, was handed 12 months imprisonment which was suspended for two years. He was also made the subject of a thinking skills rehabilitation programme, a 12 month drug rehabilitation programme and 120 hours unpaid work.

Roger Brown, prosecuting, said the offence took place on August 2 this year, after Carolan and the other man made their way through the car park at the back of the station.

“They went towards the custody suite, to the side of that was the pedal station, where a number of bikes were kept,” he said. “The two pushed an e-bike each to the other side of the car park and hid behind a lorry with the bikes.

“By this time, they were seen by a detective who alerted those in the police station.”
