Body of man found in woodland on Longridge Fell identified

The body of a man found in a woodland on a fell by members of the public has been identified by police. It is thought the body could have been on Longridge Fell, Lancashire, for many months.

Police released a statement yesterday (April 20) revealing the man had a scar on his stomach consistent with an appendectomy and that he could have been where he was found for months. Police issued an update today saying they have been able to identify the body.

Enquiries are ongoing to identify the person's next of kin.

A Lancashire Constabulary spokesperson said: "Further to our earlier appeals, we have now identified the body of a man found earlier this month in woodland off Birdy Brow in Longridge Fell.

"Enquiries are ongoing to identify and speak to his next of kin. Thank you to everyone who shared our appeals for information."

Emergency services, including Bowland Mountain Rescue, attended the area off Birdy Brow on April 9, before finding the body of the deceased male. It was previously reported that the man’s death is being treated as unexplained. Police say there are no suspicious circumstances.

A Home Office post-mortem examination was 'inconclusive' according to police, and further tests are needed to try and establish how he died.
