Body found as fire breaks out at block of flats - live updates

A person was found dead after a fire broke out at a block of flats.

Police and firefighters rushed to the scene of a fire at a flat in Oldham last night. Emergency services responded to the reports of a property fire on Walkers Road, in the Hollins area, at around 8.25pm on Thursday evening (February 20).

Several fire crews and police patrols attended but a person was pronounced dead at the scene, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has confirmed.

Work is ongoing to fully establish the identification of the person. An investigation is currently underway and specialist teams are assessing the flat to establish a cause of the ignition.

Detective Inspector Roberto Dicorato, from GMP’s Oldham district, added:“We have not yet established the full circumstances and would ask anyone with any information, or who witnessed the fire last night, to please get in touch. This includes anyone with nearby CCTV or doorbell footage.”
