Bob MacIntyre fulfilling Ryder Cup dream as Scots kids told it doesn't matter 'where the hell you are from'

Bob MacIntyre believes his arrival at the Ryder Cup proves no Scottish kid should ever give up on their sporting dreams.

The 27-year-old is in Rome fulfilling a childhood ambition as he represents Europe in golf’s showpiece team event. MacIntyre is proud to be flying the Scottish flag. But, in addition, the fact he’s born-and-bred in Oban and representing Glencruitten Golf Club means the world to him.

MacIntyre says it’s evidence you do need to be from the big cities to chase your dream and can make it happen no matter your background or postcode. He said: “It’s massive for me. The support I have had from family, friends, the golf club, everything has been huge. The amount of people I have spoken to, kids that I have spoken to, who have been told don’t chase that dream, you’ll never do it, you won’t achieve that.

“I’d say that is Scottish-wide. If you are from certain areas. It is easier to achieve it or you have more of a chance to achieve it if you are from certain areas of the country. Fact. It doesn’t matter the sport. From the local areas, outside of the big cities, it is harder to make something happen just with support and funding.

“I was lucky I had a family that supported me from the start. My dad is sporty and knew the ability I had within other sports. I didn’t really pick golf. Golf picked me from where I lived. I lived on a golf course.

“I just want to be able to show people. I have just started my journey, but I want to do something that can show people that it doesn’t matter where the hell you are from, you can do what you want so long as you have the right support and the right commitment to what you are doing.”
