Blair Spittal is playing his best football and we want to keep him beyond the summer, says Motherwell boss

Stuart Kettlewell says Motherwell are doing everything they can to keep Blair Spittal at the club, and reckons he’s playing the best football of his career.

Spittal is out of contract this summer and will attract interest, as he is outright top scorer at the club with 11, following his scorchers against Livingston in a 3-1 win on Wednesday, and the opener in a 3-1 defeat at home to Celtic on Sunday.

But Kettlewell says the midfielder’s all-round game has been tremendous this season, and knows the player well, having signed him for Ross County back in 2019.

Kettlewell said: “We manage these situations as best we can.

“We want to keep our best players at the club and we try to be as proactive as we possibly can be in that, but the one bit that I allude to, that I think people forget, is that we need all parties to be in that.

“Blair has been great, there have been a couple of conversations. If we specify with him, he’s loving his football.

“There has been a bit of change in his life with having his first child and stuff like that, and I think he has handled all of that tremendously well, but how much more blatant can you make it?

“You’re looking at one of the top performers in the league, in my opinion – and again, people would shoot me down for that – but of course we want to keep him at Motherwell, that goes without saying.

“He’s outright top scorer, which is so impressive for a midfielder, and you look at the goals that everyone probably highlights, but go and look at his performances, the assists, the influence that he has on our team with and without the ball – it’s quite remarkable.
