Ben Foster retires as Wrexham goalkeeper and ex-Manchester United man calls time on career

Former Manchester United and Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster has announced his retirement.

The 40-year-old shot stopper only came out of retirement in March to fill in for the Red Dragons after Rob Lainton suffered an injury. During this time, the ex-England international became a fan favourite and saved a last minute penalty to help the Welsh club beat Notts County in a pivotal top of the table National League clash last season.

After securing promotion to League Two, Foster's contract expired but he decided to sign a one-year extension for Wrexham's first season back in the Football League. However, it has been a difficult start to the new term for the 'keeper.

Wrexham have conceded five against both MK Dons and Swindon Town already this season and Foster has yet to keep a clean sheet. The 5-5 draw with the Robins on Saturday proved to be his last appearance as he announced his retirement on Monday morning.

In a statement, Foster said: "The honest truth is that my performances this season haven’t reached the level I demand of myself and I feel that now is the right time to retire. At the forefront of my mind when making this decision, was not only what was best for me but also the club, and making the decision now gives the club every opportunity to assess their options before the window closes. Wrexham will always have a special place in my heart."

Responding to Foster's decision, his manager Phil Parkinson said: "Ben has been the model professional while at Wrexham and has done everything we have asked of him.
